Our first group meeting took place on August 30, 2018. Although it came with some challenges on my end trying to connect remotely, we were able to successfully get through and go over some basics. First, journaling our adventures will be a must. The experiences we will have will not want to be forgotten and may even take some reflection and decompression. We will have limited cell phone usage with limited service, so again - journal. We also want to share this experience with our family and friends. Thus, this blog. Check in with us from time to time and see where the semester takes us!
We must visit our local travel clinic to prepare for the trip. We will receive a typhoid vaccination and chloroquine anti-malarian pills. Sounds a little scary, but then again so does malaria. No thanks! Fundraising - we continue to raise funds to provide medical supplies and support to the organization we are working with, Hands Up for Haiti. In addition to our personal fundraising, group events such as a night at the Pizza Ranch, a chili feed at a Bison game, and a marathon in October will be organized. Please reach out to your student and ask how you can help. T-Shirts! I was so excited to put my graphic design skills to good use for this blog and our group shirts. If you are a friend or family member and would like one to commemorate our group, please let your student know. - Rachelle Wirtzfeld
